Streitraum is a series of events that has been offered by the Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz in Berlin since February 2000. Each season has a topical political, social or economic theme. Every four to six weeks, individual aspects of the topic arehighlightedin moderated panel discussions by international guests from the social sciences and humanities , politics and culture as well as experts from the fields of technology, media and natural science .

Characteristics

Streitraum is curated by the journalist and author Carolin Emcke , who has also moderated since 2004. At the beginning of each event, she makes it clear why the name Streitraum is a “fraudulent label”: There is no argument, but rather thought together. At the end, the forum opens for questions from the audience. For each season there is a main theme from the political, social or economic area.

history

The Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz in Berlin has been organizing the series Streitraum since January 2000 and invites experts from the cultural, social and human sciences at home and abroad every four to six weeks on Sundays at 12 noon.

The origins of the dispute go back to 1996. At that time the series was offered in the barracks at the Deutsches Theater Berlin under the direction of Jens Hillje.

Example of topic structuring over a season

The theme of the 2014/2015 season, In Search of Democracy - or: The Public and Mistrust , was No Democracy. Nowhere? opened. In an interview with Deirdre Curtin, Professor of European Law, the focus was on the role of business and the secret services as political actors.

In the event that followed, Alain Badiou and Thomas Ostermeier discussed the question of the legitimacy and authority of democracy from the perspective of philosophy and theater .

Two Streitraum -Dates every few months were for a look at the current political situation in Russia and the Ukraine stated. Under the title Thinking of Russia… Carolin Emcke and her guests, including Alice Bota , Nino Harati vili and Katja Petrowskaja , exchanged views on the importance of fiction for a look at the current political situation in these regions.

Another event focused on domestic politics: The NSU trial was the subject of right-wing radicalism - in the blind spot of democracy? with Aiman Mazyek , Christoph Möllers , Özlem Topçu and the lawyer Antonia von der Behrens.

In search of a clarification of the relationship between man and city, Carolin Emcke went four weeks later with the Indian-American writer Suketu Mehta, during the next event, Mistrust and the Public with Heinz Bude , Bernhard Pörksen and Sonja Zekri , the crisis of confidence in journalism had on the subject.

The following dispute established a connection to a play performed at the Schaubühne. Milo Rau's play The Civil Wars , which was co-produced by the Schaubühne , opened the International New Drama Festival (FIND) in this theater in April 2015 . Based on this piece, in the panel discussion Milo Rau, the head of the Institute for Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin Gudrun Krämer and the member of the Bundestag Franziska Brantner with Carolin Emcke addressed the "question of the idea of Europe amid the challenges of radicalization, de-solidarization and violence ".

In the final event of the season, the cultural theorist Klaus Theweleit made connections between his analyzes of the pleasure of killing and the political discourse on violence.

Example of a single event: "Antisemitism in Hungary - What to do?"

In the dispute on January 15, 2012, the topic of anti-Semitism in Hungary - What to do? the philosopher Ágnes Heller , the publicist Paul Lendvai , the theater scholar Ivan Nagel and the pianist András Schiff . The purpose of the event was to investigate the rise in anti-Semitism and xenophobia in Hungary and wanted to "draw attention to what is happening beyond all European norms."

While Schiff called the mood in the country "frightening", Paul Lendvai could not see any "government-led" anti-Semitism. But “an openly anti-Jewish affect has become socially acceptable in the media landscape.” Ágnes Heller, who, unlike the other guests, still lives in Hungary, took the Hungarian population “against overly sweeping condemnations” in the course of the discussion. Lendvai and Heller connected the current situation with the Hungarian trauma of the 20th century: the great loss of territory after the First World War under the Treaty of Trianon and the Hungarian People's Uprising , in which Hungary felt abandoned by the world. Ivan Nagel, on the other hand, saw Hungary's alleged victim role as a “victim ideology ” that made members of the Jewish population groups a scapegoat again .

The discussants were unanimous in their desire for a “stronger civil society that also supports conservative voices” and for a vigilant view of “adherence to democratic values” in economic aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund . In the final discussion, the audience suggested creating a donation account for “funds for the democratic opposition and independent media”.

"Dispute room extra"

Occasionally, there is also a separate dispute room for current events, the subject of which is independent of the main theme of the season. Examples of this were asylum in Germany in 2013 !? On the situation of refugees in Germany 20 years after the 'asylum compromise' and the conversations with Andreas Huckele about power, sexuality and violence as well as with David Grossman about grief, a question sent out.

In December 2015. as Streitraum extracting a reading on the subject line with Lars Eidinger , Nina Hoss , Eva Meckbach , Terézia Mora , Thomas Meier Easter , Katja Petrovskaya , Najem Wali , Liao Yiwu and Carolin Emcke organized. With this benefit event the Schaubühne supported Pro Asyl and called for donations for this organization.

Appreciation

Jason Farago from BBC Culture described the controversy as "an intelligent and aggressive public lecture series." (In German: "an event format with witty panel discussions in which no mince is said") Roland Dantz, Lord Mayor of Kamenz , used Dispute space as a standing term, when he said in 2015 on the occasion of the presentation of the Lessing Prize of the Free State of Saxony when welcoming the award winner Carolin Emcke : “We are in the council chamber, or rather the citizens' hall of our city. Sometimes very different views collide here, if you will, world views and with that, dear Ms. Carolin Emcke, I welcome you to a dispute . "

financing

Streitraum has been organized together with the Federal Agency for Civic Education since 2007 and financially supported by it. Its leader, Thomas Krüger , was a guest on the podium at some argument room events. The cooperation enables a low entry price of 6.00 euros (since the season 17/18), for those entitled to a discount entry is 2.00 euros.
