from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lessing Prize of the Free State of Saxony was founded in 1993 by the government of the Free State of Saxony and is awarded every two years. It consists of a main prize, which is intended to honor outstanding achievements in the spirit of Lessing , primarily in the field of literature, literary criticism and theater (statutes); it is endowed with 13,000 euros. In addition, two sponsorship prizes for the Lessing Prize will be awarded, which publicly recognize and promote promising beginnings in these areas; these are each endowed with 5,500 euros.

The award ceremony by the Prime Minister usually takes place on January 21, the eve of Lessing's birthday (January 22, 1729), as part of the Lessing Days organized by the Lessing Museum in Kamenz , his hometown .

The award ties in with the tradition of the Lessing Prize of the GDR , which was awarded by the GDR Ministry of Culture from 1955 to 1989 .
