Rainer Geissler

Rainer Geißler (born May 8, 1939 in Thum / Erzgebirge ) is Professor em. for sociology at the University of Siegen .

Life

Geißler graduated from high school in Kiel in 1959 and after completing his military service initially studied history , Romance studies and philosophy , and later also sociology at the universities of Kiel , Freiburg i. Br. , Pau (France) and Basel . He passed the teaching examination for grammar schools in 1967 in Kiel in the subjects history and French and added sociology to these in 1969. From 1968 to 1975 he was a research assistant at the sociological seminar at the University of Basel, where he received his doctorate in 1971. At that time he also worked as a consultant at Prognos AG in Basel. From 1975 to 1981 he worked as a professor of sociology at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg. Geissler has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Siegen since 1981. In 1996/97 he researched and lectured as a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver (Canada).

Areas of work and memberships

His most important research area is social structure analysis and research into social inequality with a particular focus on comparing East and West Germany. A standard work of sociology his book on the social structure in Germany, where he was house model of social stratification of Ralf Dahrendorf modernized and u. a. expanded to include foreigners. In numerous studies on socio-structural development, he takes a position against the notion of the dissolution of classes and strata popular in German sociology - often with reference to the critical empirical-theoretical approach of the sociology classic Theodor Geiger . He also researched the problems of migrants and integration in a comparison of Germany and Canada. He is currently also concerned with the sociology of mass communication in connection with the role of the mass media in the integration of migrants. He introduced the concept of “ media integration ” into the scientific discourse. Further research areas are social and ethnic selection in the German educational system and so-called foreigner crime .

Geissler is involved in the German Society for Sociology (DGS) and was a founding member and board member of the section on social inequality and social structure analysis as well as a member of the council (1997-2004).

He is a reviewer for several foundations and social science journals. Since 1998 he has been a member of the jury of the Fritz Thyssen Prize for the best social science essays and since 2003 a member of the Migration Council (2010-2013 board member). In 2001 and 2003 he worked as a specialist in the evaluation of the Swiss University of Applied Sciences (Swiss Peer Review 2001 and 2003).
