Horst Pöttker (born December 29, 1944 in Bad Segeberg ) is a German social scientist , university professor and publicist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Horst Pöttker graduated from the Walddörferschule in Hamburg in 1964 , studying social sciences , humanities , philosophy and mathematics in Hamburg, Zurich, Kiel and Basel. In 1978 he received his doctorate from the University of Basel (Dr. phil.-hist.). He then worked from 1982 to 1985 as a research assistant in sociology at the University of Siegen. 1985–1996 he was the editor in charge of the magazine "medium" in the community work of Protestant journalism. At the University of Leipzig from 1992–1995 he was a visiting professor for communication studies (focus: ethics of journalistic action). In 1995 he qualified as a professor at the University of Siegen in the subject sociology (focus: sociology of communication and public media). From 1995 to 2013 he taught and researched as a professor for theory and practice of journalism at the University of Dortmund . Since 2001 guest professorships and lecture tours have taken him to the universities of Rostov-on-Don , Iowa , Stavropol , Vienna and St. Petersburg .

In spring 2013 , Horst Pöttker retired from TU Dortmund University and was appointed Senior Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg in the 2015 summer semester.

From 2002–2013, Horst Pöttker was the managing director of the News Enlightenment Initiative (INA), the counterpart to the American media democracy initiative Project Censored . In 2004 he founded the Association for the Promotion of Journalistic Self-Control (FPS) together with Wolfgang R. Langenbucher and Achim Baum. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Network for Eastern Europe Reporting (n-ost) and the Council for Migration . In 2018 he founded the bilingual journal "Journalistik" / "Journalism Research" with four colleagues.
