Project Censored

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Project Censored is a non-profit organization and a project for the promotion of investigative journalism within the "Sonoma State Foundation" in the USA . It is directed by Sonoma State University 's social science faculty .

project goal

According to their official website, Project Censored tracks the news published in independent / alternative journals and newsletters. From these, the organization compiles an annual list of 25 news articles of social importance that have largely been "overlooked", that have received insufficient coverage or that have been self-censored by the major news networks.

In their work, the group claims to protect the 1st Amendment to the United States Constitution ( freedom of information ). The project is built around the university course “Sociology 435: Media Censorship”, which requires intensive research in library databases. Each student is encouraged to develop news discovery and research skills in order to compile their own reports on the over 200 underexposed topics written on by the group each year. One of the project objectives is the development of a national news media network that is anchored at the local level and which is intended to guarantee a greater variety of information for the regional mainstream audience at various levels. To this end, support and funding is given to journalists, the faculty and students in their project-related research.

According to the group, a report picked up by Project Censored should: It should

  1. Contain information that the majority of the population should rightly know, but to which they have limited or no access.
  2. Be current, in the course of development, and relevant to a significant number of citizens of the United States.
  3. Have a clearly defined concept and be supported by solid, verifiable documentation.
  4. have been published in electronic or written form, in a newspaper, journal, magazine, newsletter, or in a similar form of publication from a foreign or domestic source.
  5. have direct connections and implications for people within the US, possibly with regard to foreign activities by US citizens.

Main sponsors are hundreds of Individuals, Working Assets , Anita Roddick , The Body Shop , as well as various high-ranking officials of the University of Sonoma State, especially in the social science faculty.

Project Censored was founded in 1976 by Dr. Carl Jensen founded. He retired in 1996, since then the project has been led by Dr. Peter Phillips headed.

Published works

Project Censored publishes an annual paperback report on the "Top 25 Censored Stories of the Year". The features of the book include the " Junk Food News ", comics from "Tom Tomorrow", updates from older top stories, essays and interviews. It is printed in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK. Another project, For the Record , a weekly radio show that addresses underrepresented issues, is hosted by Pat Thurston.

supporter

Walter Cronkite says, “ Project Censored is one of the organizations we should listen to to ensure the practice of thorough and ethical journalism by our newspapers and news networks. Noam Chomsky is a supporter of the group.

criticism

Although the group never explicitly takes a political position, some critics claim that almost every story that Project Standard puts in the spotlight has a “left” bias: reports that say “big business,” economic inequality, environmental damage, war, etc. have on the subject.

Project Censored and its supporters argued that Conservatives are invited to serve as “judges” each year, but that the majority of the time they turn down the post; that typical criticism of the “right wing”, such as the so-called “big government” issue, has already been sufficiently taken up by the mainstream media; and that Project Censored did in fact publish articles from The Spotlight , a conservative newspaper. Project Censored tries to correct the tendentious reporting of the mainstream media that he has observed, since from their perspective, "any media distortion at the highest journalistic level mostly favors the established political, economic and social power centers."
