The Hrubá Skála Castle (German: Groß-Skal Castle ) is located on a massive, steep sandstone cliff above the Hrubá Skála town of the same name in Okres Semily in the Czech Republic. It is located six kilometers southwest of Turnov . The Groß-Skaler rock town is in the immediate vicinity .

history

The Hrubá Skála Castle was built on the site of a castle that was first mentioned in 1353 when it was owned by Hynek von Waldstein and was considered impregnable. It was the seat of the manor of the same name with changing owners, including the lords of Hasenburg , von Pernstein and, at the beginning of the 16th century, the lords of Boskowitz . In 1515 it came to the Smiřický von Smiřice , who had the castle converted into a Renaissance chateau in the second half of the 16th century . Your last name bearer was Jindřich ( Heinrich ) Smiřický, who was held by his uncle and guardian Wenzel Eusebius von Waldstein, called Wallenstein, at Groß-Skal Castle. After Jindřich's death in 1630, the Hrubá Skála manor and castle fell to the von Waldstein family . Franz Adam von Waldstein sold both in 1821 to Johann Anton Lexa von Aehrenthal, whose grandson Alois Lexa von Aehrenthal was born at Groß-Skal Castle. During his reign, the castle was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by Bernhard Grueber in 1859 . It remained in the possession of Lexa-Aehrenthal until it was expropriated after the end of World War II in 1945. It was then used as a rest home.

Nothing has survived from the Hrubá Skála Castle. What is remarkable about today's castle is a wing with arcades and columns, which is decorated with wall sgraffiti . In 1971 the castle was used as the setting for the Czech fairy tale film Prince Bajaja . Today it houses a hotel.
