Hrubá Skála (German Groß Skal , also Großskal ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located six kilometers southeast of Turnov on the European route 442 in the Bohemian Paradise and belongs to the Okres Semily .

history

The place name is derived from the location of the former Skála Castle , which was located on a rock and was first mentioned in 1353 when it was in the possession of the Hynek von Waldstein . It was the seat of the same basic rule Skala, which since the 18th century as a major Skal ( Hrubá Skála ), to distinguish the near located small Skal ( Mala Skala was called). At the beginning of the 16th century it consisted of 54 villages and belonged to the Lords of Boskowitz . In 1515 Sigmund Smiřický von Smiřice acquired the rule. The Smiřický von Smiřice enlarged the territory, modernized agriculture and founded manufactories . This made Groß Skal one of the largest Bohemian rulers at the beginning of the 17th century. After the possessions of the Smiřický von Smiřice were confiscated after the Battle of the White Mountain , Groß Skal fell back to the Lords of Waldstein. During the Thirty Years' War the rule was devastated by Saxon and imperial troops in 1636. Franz Adam von Waldstein sold the Groß Skal estate to Johann Anton Lexa von Aehrenthal in 1821.

The population of the village of Hrubá Skála remained insignificant. It forms the starting point for the Groß Skaler rock town to the west of the village .
