Benecko (German: Benetzko ) is a municipality in the western Giant Mountains in Okres Semily , Liberecký kraj , in the Czech Republic . In 2004 there were 1,124 inhabitants in the municipality.

The place is on the western slope of the mountain Žalý (German Heidelberg ).

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1304. It is one of the oldest Czech ski resorts. Already in the winter of 1892/93 the teacher Jan Buchar, honorary citizen of Jilemnice , was skiing here. The first ski lifts were built in the 1960s. In 2006 a chair lift was built.

The Benecko consists of the local Benecko ( Benecko ), Dolni Štěpanice ( Niederstepanitz ) Horni Štěpanice ( Oberstepanitz ) Mrklov ( Merkel village ), Rychlov ( Richlow ) Štěpanická Lhota ( Stepanitz Lhota ) Zákoutí ( Zakouti ) and Žalý ( Zaly or . Heidelberg ). Basic settlement units are Benecko, Dolní Štěpanice, Horní Štěpanice, Lhotecko, Mrklov, Rychlov and Štěpanická Lhota.

The municipality is divided into the cadastral districts of Benecko, Dolní Štěpanice, Horní Štěpanice and Mrklov.

Attractions

Not far from Benecko are the remains of a Gothic castle ruin ("Burg Wallenstein"), which was built in 1304 and abandoned in 1543. During archaeological excavations in the 1990s, part of the keep was uncovered.
