Nová Ves nad Popelkou (German: Neudorf an der Popelka ) is a municipality in Okres Semily , Czech Republic . It extends two kilometers southeast of the town of Lomnice nad Popelkou along the Popelka river .
geography
The village is 428 m above sea level. M. Neighboring towns are Lomnice nad Popelkou in the northwest, Libštát in the north, Bělá and Ústí in the east and Syřenov , Žďár u Kumburku and Ploužnice in the south.
history
The place was probably founded between 1200 and 1250. According to another source, the settlement is said to have taken place as early as 1097. Since the chapel was consecrated to Procopius, who was canonized in 1204 , the first assumption seems more credible. The first written mention of the place, which was called Nová Ves u Lomnice v Jičínsku for a long time , comes from 1360.
In 1747 the wooden chapel was replaced by a stone church and two years later the church tower was built. In the First World War, the bells were melted down except for one and the death bell. In 1925 the church received three new bells, which were lost again in the Second World War. In 1990 two new bells were bought from Brodek u Přerova and consecrated the following year.
The rectory next to the St. Prokop Church was built in 1787 and renovated in 1893.
In addition to two agricultural companies, there is also a wood processing company. Nová Ves has an outdoor swimming pool and sports facilities. The place is connected to hiking and cycling trails, which are good cross-country trails in winter.
In May 1945 the 18th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division "Horst Wessel" capitulated near Neudorf. Among them was the last Reichsführer SS, Karl Hanke , who was shot and killed by Czech partisans.
