Paseky nad Jizerou (German Pasek ) is a municipality in the valley of the Jizera ( Jizera ) in Okres Semily , Liberecký kraj in the Czech Republic .

geography

The mountain village is located in the north of the country in the Giant Mountains National Park . The highest point of the municipality is the summit Bílá skála (964 m), the lowest point is the water level of the Jizera (476 m). Most of the area is covered by spruce forests.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1654. The residents were mainly active in business. In the 17th century several glass factories worked in Paseky ; in the district called Havírna , remains of a mine have been preserved; local tradition speaks of a silver mine . The weaving trade was also widespread . In 1869 212 houses with 1710 inhabitants were counted in Paseky.

Although exclusively inhabited by Czechs, the village was annexed to the Greater German Empire during the Second World War . After the end of the war, most of the residents emigrated. Most of the houses have belonged to outsiders since then and are used as weekend and holiday homes. Currently only 251 permanent residents live in Paseky. The main source of income is tourism. There are five ski lifts and ten slopes in the village.

Attractions

The baroque church of St. Wenceslas dates from 1789. A museum has been set up in the rectory that presents folk culture from the 19th century.

Sons and daughters of the church

  • In the 19th century the village teacher Věnceslav Metelka († 1867) founded a music school in Paseky, which became known nationwide. Her focus was on playing the violin and making instruments. Metelka served the writer Karel Václav Rais as a model for his novel Zapadlí vlastenci ("The Buried Patriots") from 1893.
  • Johann Schowanek , the founder of the wooden goods and games manufacturer Schowanek , was born here on April 24, 1868.
