View of Rokytnice in the Giant Mountains

Rokytnice nad Jizerou (German Rochlitz an der Iser ) is a town in the Giant Mountains in the Czech Republic . It is located in the valley of the Huťský potok ( Hüttenbach ), a tributary of the Jizera ( Iser ) at the foot of the Kotel ( Kesselkoppe ) 5 km south of Harrachov (Harrachsdorf). The height is given as 520  m nm .

history

The place was founded around 1574. From 1629 onwards, many evangelical refugees immigrated from Arnau . In the neighboring village, Horní Branná , the Protestant church was the church of the Rochlitz Protestants until 1654. In 1682 there was an exile of 200 people due to the Habsburg re-Catholicization pressure on the Protestant population . They moved with 300 cattle as a means of transport for their belongings across the Giant Mountains to the Protestant Saxon Schwarzbächl , the rule of Uechtritz , in their freedom of belief. The leaders were Nathaniel Müller and the village judge George Gernert . At the behest of the Emperor and the Elector of Saxony, 120 exiles were returned to Rochlitz. In 1776 there was another peasant revolt in the region. In 1839 J. Grossmann opened a textile factory. The textile industry is still one of the most important economic branches in Rokytnice. From the middle of the 19th century Rochlitz formed a municipality in the judicial district of Rochlitz an der Iser , with Rochlitz being the seat of the judicial district.

In 1899 Rokytnice got a station on the Starkenbach – Rochlitz local line .

The place belonged to Austria until 1918, then to Czechoslovakia and was annexed with the Sudetenland to the German Reich in 1938. After the Second World War, the German population was expelled. After the occupation of the town in 1945, the Red Army immediately resumed the production of bed linen in the Gernert weaving mill. A Gernert and Gebert family were allowed to stay on permanently to maintain textile production.

On January 1, 2004, Rokytnice had 3,281 inhabitants.

Another sight is the town hall from 1902 to 1903, which was restored in the 1970s. Also worth seeing are a chapel from 1768, the Art Nouveau tombs of the textile manufacturer families in the cemetery and the Huťský vodopád ( Huťský vodopád ) above Rokytno.
