Darik's Boot and Nuke (mostly abbreviated with the acronymDBAN ”) is a free , Linux -based live system , the only task of which is to permanently erase hard drives or other writable data storage media . As a result, the files can not be recovered even with special forensic tools. The distribution is limited to the bare essentials and is comparatively very small in size. Thanks to the fact that DBAN can be started from removable media as well as via PXE , all available data carriers (as long as they are writable and their controller type is supported) can be deleted.

DBAN supports the controller types IDE , SATA, SATA2 , XT , SCSI and PATA ; algorithms such as the DoD 5220.22-M standard , the Gutmann method or the Canadian RCMP TSSIT OPS-II standard are offered for formatting .

reception

  • ZDNet.de recommends the use of DBAN before selling a used hard drive.
  • The Hamburger Abendblatt wrote an article about erasing hard drives using the Windows version of DBAN.
  • Computer Bild judges that the program deletes data on entire data carriers "safely but slowly".
  • The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) classifies DBAN as suitable with restrictions and with reference to options to be selected.

The point of overwriting hard disks multiple times - as also offered by DBAN - is, however, questioned. A study from 2008 came to the conclusion that after overwriting the data once, it was almost impossible to restore it, even if it was overwritten with zeros instead of randomly generated data.
