Hanč, who lived in Jilemnice , started on March 24, 1913 in an international 50-kilometer race in the Giant Mountains , which started and finished at the Elbfallbaude . During the competition, the weather suddenly changed and a snow storm approached. After Hanč continued to run, although most of the participants interrupted the race, he collapsed at gold height due to the cold . His athletic opponent Emmerich Rath found Hanč and initially carried him to his own exhaustion. Then he put Hanč in a sheltered place and ran to the Elbfallbaude to get help.

Vrbata Shack

Hanč's friend Václav Vrbata temporarily gave him his jacket so that Hanč would not freeze to death. Thanks to the jacket, Hanč survived for some time; before the rescuers arrived, he had died of exhaustion and frostbite. Shortly afterwards Vrbata also died. In memory of Vrbata, who gave his clothes and thus his life for Hanč, the building opened in 1964 on the Goldhöhe was named Vrbata-Baude .

At the site of the accident between Goldhöhe and Elbquelle, Emmerich Rath from Braunau erected a memorial at the end of March 1913 that showed a broken ski. It was later replaced by a stone monument. Later, a larger monument to Hanč and Vrbata was erected on the Goldhöhe. The story of Hanč and Vrbata was filmed by director Čeněk Duba in the film Synové hor . The exhibition of the Giant Mountains Museum Jilemnice about the beginnings of skiing is especially dedicated to Bohumil Hanč. A fragment of the old wooden plaque from the place where the athlete died can also be seen.
