List of titular bishops in the Kingdom of Hungary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After the Reformation, the Hungarian kings began to appoint so-called episcopi electi, chosen bishops who were neither consecrated nor had ecclesiastical jurisdiction, without papal approval .

Places that formerly belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary (later also to the neighboring countries ) and had been lost through the expansion of the Ottoman Empire were taken as titular seats . The appointed bishops had a seat and vote in the upper house, wore episcopal robes and were mostly endowed with significant benefits. It can be seen as a means to achieve a Catholic majority in the upper house, large parts of the higher nobility were Lutheran or Reformed.

In Hungarian: 'címzetes püspök' and after the MKL there were the following 34 Hungarian titular seats: Almis, Ansaria (Ansarien, Osaro), Arbe (Arbo), Belgrád és Szendrő (Belgrade and Semendria), Bidua, Boson (Boson), Bécs, Drivasztó (Drivest), Dulcino (dulcino), Dulm (Dulmi), Fáró (Pharos), Kattaró (Cattaro), Kurzola (Corzola), Makaria (Makarie), Novi (Novi), Pristina (Pristin), Roson (Roson), Szkutari (Scutari), Stagnó, Szardika (Sardica), Szebenikó, Szkardona (Skardona), Szkopia (Scopi), Szerbia (Serbia), Szvidnic, Temnen, Tinnin (Tinninien), Trau, Tribunic (Tridunitz), Trebinje, Veglia, Vovadra (Wowadri), Zakulmia.

The list of 22 titular seats is taken from the State Manual of 1824, they are all included in the list of the MKL, but there are also the following twelve seats mentioned: Almis, Arbe [in the schematic 1807], Bidua, Bécs, Stagnó, Szebenikó [probably Šibenik], Szvidnic, Temnen, Trau, Trebinje, Veglia [probably the island, is in the Schem. 1807!], Zakulmia. So the following seats have to be added:

and the following, where the MKL is not yet available online:

  • Trust
  • Trebinje
  • Veglia [in Schem. 1807 available!]
  • Zakulmia

In the book Hungarian Episcopate and Austrian Monarchy , Michael Anton Paintner is assigned two other titular dioceses:

  • Pullti (Poletensis)
  • Svac (Suacinensis)

The names of the bishops can be found in the online Magyar Katolikus Lexikon (MKL). As far as an ascent into the Catholic hierarchy took place, the corresponding entry was also given (HC), but the listing there still proves to be incomplete.

Since the Hungarian form of the name emerges from the link to the MKL, a German form of the first name was mostly chosen according to the model of the state manual. If no nobility designations are given, it must not be concluded that the person was not aristocratic. After all, higher degrees of nobility are indicated in the MKL entries (br for baron or baron, gr for count, hg for prince (herzeg)) and even if the person did not belong to the higher nobility, the full name can be deduced in many cases due to the predicate (e.g. Haulik György, várallyai becomes Georg Haulik von Várallya ).
