On October 17, 1769 he entered the Jesuit order in Trenčín . After the two year novitiate he studied classical languages in Leoben and from 1772 philosophy at the University of Graz . After the dissolution of the order in 1773 he studied theology and became a secular priest . Paintner became royal Hungarian titular bishop of Novi on September 27, 1816 ( Latin : electus episcopus Noviensis , Hungarian : novii czímzetes püspök ) and in 1822 royal Hungarian court trainee.

Paintner was an intimate friend of Nikolaus Révai , a member of the Jena Mineralogical Society, and had extensive correspondence.

All his life he collected everything related to the history of the Jesuit order and wanted to compose a lexicon of Jesuit writers. He bequeathed his large library, the collected documents and all his correspondence to the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma on the condition that they be given to the Jesuits when the order was to be resurrected in Hungary. The will was declared invalid due to “legal errors”. Finally, in 1830, the Abbot of Pannonhalma bought the collection.
