Rátót ( German Neustift an der Raab ) is a Hungarian municipality in the Szentgotthárd district in Vas County .
geography
The municipality is located in the west of the country, about three kilometers from the Austrian border.
Geographical location
The place is on the western edge of the Pannonian Plain , on the left bank of the Raab .
history
Rátót was originally a farm belonging to Gasztony and was first mentioned in 1428 as Rathodfolua . József Széll bought an estate here in 1865. His son Kálmán expanded the property into a representative castle and ran a model farm with cattle breeding ( "Simmentaler Schlag" ).
In 1910 the place had 358 inhabitants.
The castle survived the Second World War almost unscathed. In the years that followed, the castle's extensive library was almost completely lost. At times the castle was a cultural center, then a school. In 2003 it was converted into a hotel and has had four stars since 2011.
