history

The first written mention of Csörötnek can be found in the land registers of the Cistercian Abbey of Szentgotthárd. In 1350 the place Chyrenuk is mentioned, which was mostly inhabited by Slovenes. The place was conveniently located on the Raab on one of only two bridges over the Raab towards Körmend . From 1622 onwards there were repeated attacks by Turkish soldiers. In July 1664 the village was devastated by the Turks under Ahmed Köprülü when he went with about 50,000 men to the battle of St. Gotthard / Mogersdorf , where he was defeated by Count Montecúccoli . Most of the village belonged to the St. Gotthard Abbey. In 1898 the abbey in Csörötnek ended. Over the centuries the noble Batthyány family acquired more and more property. In 1945 the Batthyánys' lands were expropriated and state property.

The place was plundered again when, in December 1705, the Kuruc under János Bottyán , known as the Blind Bottyán, moved towards Szentgotthárd. In 1813, the mill on the Raab, which was an important source of income for the abbey, was destroyed in a major flood. In 1814 a canal was built away from the Raab to prevent future floods and a new mill was built.

As the proportion of the Slovene-speaking population decreased more and more over the centuries and the Hungarian population increased, the majority of the inhabitants were Hungarians in the 20th century, so that after the First World War the municipality remained with Hungary.

On November 1, 1944, the village was bombed by English aircraft in the early afternoon, killing 13 residents.
