history

Starting from the Meierhöfe of the Cistercian Abbey (founded by King Béla III ), the settlement was founded by the local Slovenes. The village Felsőszölnök was first mentioned in 1378 together with the neighboring community Alsószölnök (Unterzemming) as Zelnuk Superior et Inferior . The village belonged to the large estate of Dobra (today's Neuhaus in southern Burgenland ) and was owned by the Batthyánys until the middle of the 19th century . The most famous person who produced the place was Pastor József Kossics (1788–1867), who, in addition to his pastoral duties, was also active as a linguist, historian and folklore researcher. For example, he wrote the first Slovenian landscape monograph in Hungary.
