József Kossics

József Kossics ( Slovenian : Jožef Košič ; * around October 9, 1788 in Bogojina , Hungary , now Slovenia ; †  December 26, 1867 Oberzemming , Hungary) was a Slovenian writer, poet, linguist, historian, folklorist and Catholic priest in Hungary. He was of Croatian descent.

Kossics was born in Bogojina ( Hungarian : Bagonya ), in the Prekmurje region. His father József Kossics was a schoolmaster in Varaždin ( Croatia ), and his mother Ana von Kregar came from a Hungarian family which was raised to the nobility in 1650. He attended high school in Güns and Steinamanger . He was ordained a priest in 1811 and worked as a chaplain in Prekmurje, Fellsdorf , Turnišče and Sveti Jurij . In 1816 he was appointed priest at Unterzemming (a Slovenian-German village near Szentgotthárd ). His most important work is the first Slovenian monograph, Von Wenden (Slovenes) in Hungary ( O Vendskih-Totih na Vogrskom / A Magyar Országi Vendus-Tótokról ). The German edition appeared in 1829.

From 1829 Kossics was a priest in Oberzemming . He died here in 1867.
