Emmerich Christovich

Emmerich Christovich (born May 7, 1711 in Pest , † December 23, 1798 in Makó ) was a Hungarian clergyman . He was bishop of the Csanáder diocese (1777–1798).

Life

Years of study and priesthood

Emmerich Christovich studied philosophy in Buda from 1728 to 1732 and theology in Pest from 1732 to 1736. In 1736 he received in Pecs , the ordination . Here he was initially active as a philosophy professor, then as episcopal ceremonial with Bishop Sigismund Graf Berényi . Between 1748 and 1777 he was canon of this diocese and 1767–1777 provost and vicar general . In 1768 he became auxiliary bishop in Scutari .

Bishop of the Csanád diocese

Emmerich Christovich was appointed bishop of the Csanáder diocese on April 11, 1777 , and he received his episcopal ordination on September 14, 1777 in the Chakowa Cathedral. In the following years (1778–1782) he traveled through the parishes of his diocese. The first schematism of the diocese of Csanád appeared at Heimerl in Timisoara during his service . He was the first bishop to move into today's episcopal residence in 1780. The building previously served as the seat of the Salt Office. Christovich had the bishop's palace redesigned exclusively for his own use.

Last years of life and death

In the last years of his life he withdrew to Makó for health reasons, where he died on December 23, 1798. His body was buried in the Timisoara cathedral crypt . On his grave the following inscription can be read on a marble plaque : “ Pietate insignis, liberalite celeberimus, provehendae literaturae ecelesiasticae studio immortalis, ac restauratione dioecesana gloriosus praesul ” (outstanding due to piety , charity , erudition and administrative ability .)
