Franz Anton Engl of Wagrain
Count Franz Anton Engl von Wagrain (born January 25, 1702 in Schloss Mühlbach , Hohenwarth-Mühlbach am Manhartsberg , Austria ; † January 31, 1777 Timisoara , Temescher Banat ) was bishop of the Csanáder diocese between 1750 and 1777 .
Life
Years of study and priesthood
Franz Anton Engl studied philosophy at the Ettaler Knight School (Collegium nobilium) from 1711 to 1720 . After doing a master's degree from 1720 to 1723 , he studied theology at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome from 1723 to 1727. He received on March 8, 1727 through Pope Benedict XIII. the ordination . From 1727 to 1730 he was active as Passau canon in Vienna and vicar of Passau Auxiliary Bishop Franz Alois Ignaz Graf von Lamberg. From 1730 to 1734 he worked as a pastor in Hadersdorf am Kamp .
Bishop of Belgrade-Semendria
At the age of 30 after the victories of Prince Eugene , he was on April 19, 1732 by Pope Clement XII. appointed Bishop of Belgrade-Semendria . The imperial confirmation took place on August 13, 1733. In February 1734, the Processus canonicus was held in the Vienna nunciature. He took office on May 5, 1734. He was ordained bishop on June 20, 1734 by the Archbishop of Vienna , Cardinal Sigismund von Kollonitz ; Co- consecrators were Thomas John Francis de Strickland de Sizorghe , Bishop of Namur , and Auxiliary Bishop Giulio Sabbatini SchP .
After the Peace of Belgrade in 1739, the city had to be given back to Turkey. As a result, Bishop Engl had to leave the diocese and lived on his estate in Fels in Austria with the title of court bishop.
Bishop of the Csanád diocese
On July 14, 1750, the Empress Maria Theresa appointed him bishop of the Csanáder diocese with the residence in Timisoara. On October 22nd, 1750 the canonical process took place and the papal confirmation took place on December 7th, 1750. On April 1st, 1751 the enthronement took place in Timisoara. Engl resided in Timisoara from 1750 to 1766 in the Mercyhaus and from 1766 to 1777 in the garrison hospital .
In 1754, Bishop Franz Anton Engl Graf von Wagrain celebrated the first Holy Mass in the not yet completed cathedral church in Timisoara . During his term of office, 38 new pastoral care offices were established in the diocese, he consecrated the Church of Mercy in 1753, the Cathedral Church in 1754 and the Franciscan Church in Timisoara in 1755. Bishop Engl laid the foundation stone of a new church for the pilgrimage site of Maria Radna in 1756. Only eleven years later he blessed this new pilgrimage church and personally transferred the miraculous icon of the Mother of God to the new church.
Bishop Engl von Wagrain died in the military supply station of the Timisoara Theresienbastion and was buried in the crypt of the Timisoara Cathedral in 1777 .
