Nikolaus Stanislavich

Nikolaus Stanislavich OFM (born May 9, 1694 in Craiova , Principality of Wallachia ; † April 26, 1750 in Timisoara , Temescher Banat ) was bishop of the Csanád diocese from 1739 to 1750 .

Life

Years of study and priesthood

Nicholas studied Stanislavich 1709-1713 philosophy , joined in 1713 the Order of the Franciscan Province of the Bulgarian and then graduated from 1713 to 1717, the study of theology . Stanislavich was ordained deacon on December 19, 1716 , ordained priest for the Franciscan order on April 11, 1717 and entered the pastoral ministry in Little Wallachia. In 1725 he was already guardian of the Franciscan monastery in Craiova . On June 11, 1725, Pope Benedict XIII appointed him bishop of Nicopolis in Bulgaria and personally donated his episcopal ordination on June 24, 1725 ; Co- consecrators were the later Cardinal Secretary of State Curia Archbishop Nicolò Maria Lercari and Giacinto Gaetano Chiurlia (Chyurlia) OP , Bishop of Giovinazzo .

In 1739, after the first colonization campaigns, which were mainly carried out with Catholic believers of German origin, the Catholic Bulgarians also came to the Banat . They left their homeland because they were persecuted because of their beliefs. They settled in places like Winga and Altbeschenowa , where they formed strong parishes. With them came Nikolaus Stanislavich, who had been the Apostolic Administrator of Little Wallachia , which was under Austrian sovereignty, since 1732 .

Bishop of the Csanád diocese

On October 21, 1739 Charles VI appointed him . as bishop of the Csanád diocese. Stanislavich received the papal confirmation on September 20, 1740 and was enthroned on February 5, 1741 in the Timisoara Cathedral . His main concern was to secure a material basis for the diocese. He achieved that larger lands from Makó were given to the bishop for usufruct. With great care he began to organize the administration of the diocese. Stanislavich undertook extensive trips through his diocese to get an impression of the existing conditions, and also made a contribution to the blossoming of the pilgrimage site Maria Radna .

He died on April 26, 1750 and was buried in the cathedral crypt in Timisoara. He left his heart to the Blessed Virgin Mary , it is still kept in the Church of Grace in the side altar .
