Bishop Adalbert von Falkenstein

Euseb Anton Adalbert von Falkenstein zu Rimsingen OSB (born January 17, 1671 in Freiburg im Breisgau , † September 27, 1739 in Timisoara ) was bishop of the diocese of Csanád , which at that time comprised the area in what is now the border triangle of Hungary, Serbia and Romania.

Life

Adalbert, a scion of the Breisgauer noble family Falkenstein was determined by his parents early for the clergy. His father was the kk chamberlain Johann Erhard von Falkenstein, his mother, Anna Franziska née Baroness von Mercy, the daughter of the Bavarian field marshal Franz von Mercy . The couple had four sons and eight daughters. Adalbert von Falkenstein studied Humaniora in the Princely Monastery of Kempten and philosophy in Sankt Gallen . In the prince monastery of Kempten of the Benedictine order he gained the favor of his older relative, the prince Rupert von Bodman , who intended to build him up as his successor. In doing so, however, he met the successful resistance of the Convention, which insisted on freedom of choice. On December 19, 1693, Adalbert von Falkenstein was ordained a priest in Rome .

He brought relics of the catacomb saint Dioskuros, a boy, from Rome to the Wald monastery , where his sister Maria Antonia von Falkenstein was abbess. The relics were brought to Wald on August 30, 1711.

bishop

After the death of the Bishop of Csanád László Nádasdy in 1730, Adalbert von Falkenstein, who was dean of the Princely Monastery of Kempten at the time , was appointed Bishop of Csanád because of the protection of his cousin, the Banat Governor Claudius Florimund Mercy . He was ordained bishop on November 25, 1731, by the Archbishop of Vienna Cardinal Sigismund von Kollonitz ; Co-consecrators were Franz Alois von Lamberg , auxiliary bishop in Passau , and Joseph Heinrich von Braitenbücher , auxiliary bishop in Vienna.

On his initiative the bishopric was moved from Szeged to Timisoara in 1732 . It was not until 1740 that the cathedral chapter also moved.

He achieved lasting merits through the energetic reconstruction of his diocese, which was marked by the devastation of the Turkish era. On August 6, 1736, he laid the foundation stone for the cathedral in Timisoara , the largest baroque sacred building in Southeast Europe; The patrons of the construction project were Emperor Karl VI. and the Empress Maria Theresa .

Adalbert von Falkenstein published an Instructio pastoralis in 1736 , it comprises 71 detailed chapters. In 1735 the Greek Catholic parish was founded on Mühlplatz in the factory town and in 1737 the order of the Brothers of Mercy . In the last year of his term of office, 1739, the Rosalienkapelle was built to commemorate the plague epidemic with the vow to organize a procession here on May 15th every year.

Bishop Adalbert von Falkenstein died on September 27, 1739 and was buried in the crypt of the Jesuit church.
