Life

Franz Ferdinand von Rummel from an old Nuremberg patrician family studied law , philosophy and Catholic theology in Ingolstadt and wanted to join the Capuchin order . Marco d'Aviano prophesied his success as a secular priest and, after Rummel's ordination, recommended him as educator and religion teacher of the Roman-German Emperor Joseph I. In addition, the wife of Emperor Leopold I , Eleonore Magdalene von Pfalz-Neuburg , supported him began because his grandfather Johann Rummel had already served as a councilor in the Pfalz-Neuburg family . From 1684 he practiced this activity, but was soon attacked and slandered. Through the mediation of Emperor Leopold, he became Bishop of Tinna and Provost of Ardagger and Breslau.

On July 11th, 1706 he was appointed Prince-Bishop of the Diocese of Vienna by Joseph I. The papal confirmation took place on October 4th.

He was concerned about pastoral care and was able to achieve an increase in priestly ordinations. In 1708 there were 111 ordinations in the small Viennese diocese. He introduced the feast of the Rosary and in 1711 had the Pummerin poured out of the cannon balls of the second Turkish siege . He also mediated between the emperor and Pope Clement XI. when Austrian troops occupied areas of the Papal States in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1708 .

Towards the end of his life he was seriously ill and could only sleep sitting up. He died at the age of 72 in 1716 and was buried in the bishop 's crypt in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .
