Georg von Slatkonia or Jurij Slatkonja (born March 21, 1456 in Ljubljana - Laibach , ( Carniola ); † April 26, 1522 in Vienna ) was the Catholic bishop of Vienna .

Life

He studied in Laibach, Ingolstadt and Vienna, was ordained a priest, was cantor at the Vienna Court Music Band and from 1498 its director. He expanded the chapel, took on amateurs as musicians and had them perform secular works. Through him composers like Paul Hofhaimer , Heinrich Isaac and Ludwig Senfl came to Vienna. No works have survived from his own composition activity.

He became canon and provost of Laibach and in 1506 administrator of the Pedena (Piben) diocese in Istria . On March 1, 1513 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Vienna by Emperor Maximilian I and confirmed by Pope Leo X on August 12 . His episcopal ordination on November 13th in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna was the first since the diocese was founded in 1469.

In 1521 the Reformation preacher Paul Seperatus came to Vienna, whom Slatkonia had to have preached in St. Stephen's Cathedral on January 12, 1522.

He is buried in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

The Archdiocese of Vienna has been awarding the Bischof Slatkonia Prize for new liturgical music since 2000 .
