Visitatio Kazoiana 1698

On July 7, 1696, Stefan Kazó, as Archdeacon of Eisenburg, received the order from Leopold I, King of Hungary , to conduct a church visit in the area of the Eisenburg County . Kazó was only able to tackle this task from February 10, 1697 after consultation and in agreement with the responsible bishop of Raab , Prince Christian August of Saxony .

In the period from February 23 to April 16, 1697 and from October 9, 1697 to March 28, 1698, the 42 year old Kazó personally visited the county and inspected a total of 663 parish and church locations.

Kazó's handwritten visitation protocols have been preserved and are now in the diocese archive in Szombathely / Steinamanger. The visit reports are of eminent importance for the topography of the former Eisenburg County with the former parts in Burgenland and the Slovenian Übermur region / Prekmurje and represent a valuable historical source for these regions.

The visitation records, written in Latin , provide information about the parishes , pastors and patron saints , about ecclesiastical institutions, schools and religious folk customs and provide information about the population in national and denominational terms.
