history

The Goričko region was forested throughout for a very long time and therefore never very densely populated. Already in the earliest times people settled this gentle hill world and named it Goričko, after gorice , the Slovenian word for vineyards. At the turn of the century, a third of the total population had emigrated when phylloxera destroyed almost all of the vines.

On October 9, 2003, the Krajinski Park Goričko Nature Park was founded. It encloses all eleven communities. The park's visitor center is at Grad Castle , one of the largest castles in Slovenia. The park borders the Hungarian Őrség National Park in the north and the Austrian Raab Nature Park in the west. Together they form the transnational, 1044 km² large nature park Raab-Őrség-Goričko .
