The county bordered the Austrian crown lands of Lower Austria and Styria and the Hungarian counties of Ödenburg (Sopron) , Wesprim (Veszprém) and Zala . It stretched between the Mur in the south, the Alps in the west and the Marcal river in the east, with the Raab flowing through it.

history

The county was established in the 11th century and existed in this form until 1918. The western part was part of Burgenland in Austria , which was officially established in 1921 , while the rest of the eastern part remained with Hungary. Only in the south was a small part, the so-called Übermur area , ceded to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . As a result of the major county reform in 1950, part of Sopron county was added to the county area, in return, some communities north of Zalaegerszeg were added to Zala county and a small area west of Pápa to Veszprém county .
