geography

Map of Sibiu County around 1890

With its 88 municipalities (1881) it covered an area of about 3,600 km² and bordered on the counties of Hunyad , Unterweißburg (Alsó-Fehér) , Groß-Kokelburg (Nagy-Küküllő) , Fogaras and the Kingdom of Romania . It is particularly mountainous in the south ( Surul ). The fertile lowlands are traversed by the Alt and the Zibin (Szeben) river, which is named in Hungarian .

In 1881 it had 141,627 Romanian, Saxon and Hungarian inhabitants.

The official seat was the city of Sibiu (Romanian Sibiu , Hungarian Nagyszeben ). From there, the 36 km long "Karolinenstrasse", partly carved into the rock, leads along the Alt River through the Rotenturm Pass into Wallachia .

history

The county was created during the Hungarian county reform in 1876 from the administrative areas of the Hermannstädter Stuhl , the Mühlbacher Stuhl , the Reussmarkter Stuhl and the Leschkircher Stuhl ( seven chairs ) as well as small parts of the counties of Oberweißburg and Unterweissenburg and existed in this form until 1918/1920. After the end of the First World War, the area came to Romania and existed here with interruptions until 1960 as Sibiu County within the old borders, since then the main part has been in today's Sibiu County , the area around the city of Sebeş is now part of Alba County .
