Vasvár ( German Eisenburg ) is a small town in Hungary . It is located in the hilly landscape of Western Transdanubia , in the south of Vas County and is the center of Vasvár County (Vasvári járás) . The Peace of Vasvár was signed here in 1664 . The city is also known today as a place of pilgrimage to Mary and as the venue for the annual Hegyhát days.
history
The name of the city goes back to its important role in iron processing ( Hungarian vas 'iron') and the castle located here (Hungarian vár ) from the Arpad period . Vasvár experienced its heyday in the Middle Ages, when it was a royal city and county seat. During the tripartite division of Hungary (1526 / 1541-1699) Vasvár was in the contested Habsburg-Ottoman border area. As a result of the Turkish wars , the city lost its importance and in 1578 the further north-west of Szombathely (German: Steinamanger ) became the new seat of Vas County. With the Peace of Vasvár in 1664 the Turkish war of 1663/1664 was ended. After the end of the Turkish wars, the city became an estate center in the 18th century.
