The Body Shop is a British retail chain for beauty products and part of the Brazilian cosmetics retailing group Natura & Co . It advertises with the waiver of animal testing and compliance with other ethical principles.
history
The Body Shop was founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick in Brighton ( England ); In 1984 the company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange.
On March 17, 2006, The Body Shop was sold to L'Oréal , the world's largest cosmetics company, for £ 652 million . This sale was rated controversially in part. The organization Naturewatch then expanded its call to boycott L'Oréal to include The Body Shop. Other groups such as PETA , however, hoped that L'Oréal would take over the waiver of animal testing. In autumn 2006, The Body Shop transferred The Body Shop At Home, the direct sales model that had been successfully tested in the USA and Canada, to Europe. In addition to the stationary business, The Body Shop products have also been sold directly in Germany since then . The sales staff mostly rely on the so-called party system, which other direct sales companies, such as Tupperware , also use to sell their products. This direct sales ended at the end of June 2008. The Body Shop At Home has been a member of the Bundesverband Direktvertrieb Deutschland eV since April 19, 2007 and has thus recognized its standards of conduct for fair direct sales.
In March 2010, the Swiss Coop took over the 37 Swiss branches at an undisclosed price from the L'Oréal Group, in which the Swiss food company Nestlé has a significant stake. Since then, these shops have been run under the name The Body Shop Switzerland.
In June 2017, The Body Shop was sold to the Brazilian Natura group for around one billion euros . Cooperations already existed with this in advance.
In September 2019, The Body Shop will announce certification as a B Corporation .
Ethical principles
The Body Shop's product line is based on five pillars:
- Animal welfare - The company refrains from animal testing because, in their opinion, they are neither necessary nor morally justifiable in the cosmetics industry.
- Help through fair trade - natural ingredients are bought from small traders around the world with the aim of establishing a long-term, fair trade relationship.
- Self-respect - The Body Shop assumes that everyone is beautiful and should be proud of it.
- Human rights - Respect for human rights is a central concern of the business line, in order to support these various initiatives are supported.
- Environmental protection - The responsibility of companies to conserve the world's resources is another concern.
The Body Shop has been running regular campaigns for years to draw attention to grievances and take action against them. The first of these campaigns was launched in 1986 to save the whales. It followed u. a. Campaigns to raise awareness of the needs of the Ogoni people, against animal experiments, for renewable energies. In 2003 the "Stop domestic violence" campaign was launched.
In August 2009, a three-year global campaign against the sexual exploitation of children began. This campaign takes place in cooperation with ECPAT (Working Group for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation). In Germany, signatures are being collected calling on the federal government to take better care of the aftercare of victims of sexual exploitation. The branches can also buy a special hand cream, of which EUR 6.32 goes to ECPAT eV Germany.
criticism
The Body Shop has often been criticized in the past for the divergence between values and reality. In particular, the Help through Fair Trade program was described as a pure PR measure with no benefit for the suppliers. The Body Shop restricts the waiver of animal testing to ingredients that have not been tested after 1991. Natural ingredients are used in the products, but not exclusively. For example, microplastics are still used in many products .
