Siegfried Jäger

Siegfried Jäger (born April 17, 1937 in Duisburg ; † August 16, 2020 ) was a German linguist . From 1972 to 2002 he was a full professor at the Gerhard-Mercator-University-GH-Duisburg . Since 1987 he has been head of the Duisburg Institute for Linguistic and Social Research (DISS) and researched discourse analysis on racism and right-wing extremism .

Life

Jäger was born in 1937 as the son of an engineer and his wife. He attended schools in Waldmannshof in the Mergentheim district (from 1943) and Duisburg (from 1946). After graduating from Mercator-Gymnasium in 1956 , he studied German, English and theology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn from the 1957 summer semester . He finished his studies in 1963 with the 1st state examination in German and English. In 1958/59 he studied for two trimesters at the University of Exeter in England.

From 1963 to 1965 he was a research assistant at the University of Bonn. From 1965 to 1971, Jäger was a research assistant at the Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim . In 1967, hunters in Hugo Moser at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn with a thesis studies on the composition of the Crescentia Kaiserchronik, the Vorauer and Strassburger Alexander and Duke Ernst B. to Dr. phil. In 1971/72 he was Scientific Counselor and Professor of German Linguistics at the Pedagogical University (PH) in Dortmund . He received research assignments a. a. from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, from MAGS / MASSKS NRW and from the Ministry of Culture NRW . In 1997 he was visiting professor at the University of Klagenfurt . He retired in 2002 . His academic students include: a. Jobs Paul and Frank Wichert .

In 1987, Jäger was the founder and since then head of the Duisburg Institute for Language and Social Research (DISS). His research focus is critical discourse analysis , for which he has written a paradigmatic introductory work. Lecture tours have taken him around the world, numerous project weeks, but also colloquia on right-wing extremism and racism . Jäger acted as an expert for the Interior Committee of the German Bundestag ("Politically Motivated Violence" 1993), the main committee of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia ("Racism and Right-Wing Extremism" 1993) and for the round table of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ("Youth and Violence") 1994). Together with Teun van Dijk , Laura Balbo and Nora Räthzel , he founded the International Association for the Study of Racism (IASR) in 1991 , of which he is a member.

From 1978 to 1983 he worked as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the field of teaching and learning research. He was also a reviewer for the German-Jewish Society (1992), the Swiss National Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (2002/03) and the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism (2002, 2004). In 1993/94 he designed numerous workshops on right-wing extremism and racism for RWE . From 2000 to 2004 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance (BfDT).

From 1969 to 1971, Jäger was part of the editorial team of the magazine Muttersprachige. Quarterly for the German language and from 1971 to 1985 the department of Linguistic Reports . He was co-editor of Discourse & Society (now a member of the Advisory Editorial Board) and the Journal of Multicultural Discourses .

He was married to the linguist Margarete Jäger .
