Accreditation by the Science Council

First accreditation 2014

In June 2013, the State of Berlin applied for the university to be accredited by the Science Council . The examination by the Science Council showed "that the HMKW corresponds to the scientific standards of a university." On the basis of this assessment, the Science Council granted the accreditation. During the five-year development phase, the university successfully established itself “with a convincing professional profile and with courses of study that are constantly in demand by prospective students.”

However, the Science Council also found points of criticism. Above all, the personal links between the university and the sponsoring company were criticized. The appointment procedure, the examination regulations and the library equipment were also rated as in need of improvement. The Science Council therefore made the accreditation subject to conditions.

Re-accreditation 2019

In the reaccreditation process in 2019, the Science Council came to the conclusion that the HMKW met the scientific standards of a university. The range of courses fits in with the profile of a university for media, communication and business. Based on this assessment, the Science Council granted accreditation again.

With regard to the quality of the course, the Science Council noted that the practical relevance of the courses offered, for example through the involvement of the students in project work, corresponds to the institutional requirements of a university of applied sciences. However, the master’s offer requires a stronger research base.

Regarding the assessment by the student body, the Science Council stated: “Discussions with the students on site showed overall a high level of satisfaction with studying at the university. In particular, personal support offers and open communication were positively highlighted. "

Once again, the Science Council tied its accreditation to conditions:

  • The scientific independence from the sponsoring company must be structurally better secured.
  • Rector and Chancellor who have a financial stake in the sponsoring company would have to resign their membership in the examination boards due to possible conflicts of interest and reduce their too far-reaching competencies in quality management.
  • The basic and appointment regulations are to be changed in a number of points, for example representatives of the sponsoring institution must be excluded from the appointments committee meetings in future.
  • At least 50% of the teaching at all locations must be carried out by full-time professors.
  • Research must be raised to a level appropriate for master’s degree programs.
