The International Psychoanalytic University Berlin (short IPU Berlin or even IPU ) is a nationally recognized and the Science Council accredited private college with university status. The sponsor is the International Psychoanalytic University non-profit Berlin GmbH, whose sole shareholder is the Foundation for the Promotion of University Psychoanalysis .

history

In 2012, journalist Manuela Heim called behavior therapy the “favorite child” of academic psychology. As a result, psychoanalysis got into a "vicious circle". “Where should the next generation of psychoanalytic professors and researchers come from?” She quoted the psychoanalyst Christa Rohde-Dachser , who after “13 years in academic teaching” had drawn a “radical conclusion”: “The entrepreneur founded foundation capital with 6 million euros its own university for psychoanalysis. ”With the inheritance of his father, Rohde-Dachser first set up the foundation for the promotion of university psychoanalysis . The background to this was a development to which Heim had alluded and which had led to the fact that psychological chairs were less and less filled with psychoanalysts for many years . With the help of the foundation , Rohde-Dachser financed the first psychoanalytical university in Germany. In 2009 she founded the IPU Berlin together with Jürgen Körner .

“This was intended to create an academic location for psychoanalysis within the German university landscape, in which it has been pushed back more and more by the scientific orientation of academic psychology in recent decades, in which teaching and research are not only psychological but also psychoanalytic The basis could grow and prosper again. "

- Rohde-Dachser : IPU

The IPU has developed over the years, both in terms of content and quantity, which is evident from the expansion of the curricula and the growing number of students and employees. In the 2017/18 winter semester there were 632 students (compared to 583 students in the 2015/16 winter semester) and 115 research assistants. In order to give less well-off interested parties the opportunity to study, a financing model was developed that is offered under the term reverse generation contract. The course is financed for the participants in this program and “in return” they pay back a “percentage share” for “financing additional study places” as soon as they “have a minimum income”.

Accreditations

The IPU Berlin has been institutionally accredited by the Science Council with effect from November 27, 2014 and has been officially recognized by the Berlin Senate as a university with university status. This means that the degrees to be acquired in all courses are legally equivalent to those of any other German university. The curricula of the bachelor's and master's degree programs in “Psychology” ensure the generally recognized prerequisites for subsequent training as a psychological psychotherapist as well as relevant scientific qualification if they are completed consecutively .

The bachelor's and master's degree in psychology at the IPU Berlin have been certified by the accreditation agency ACQUIN, which is certified by the German Accreditation Council .

Study opportunities

At the IPU, the subject of psychology is offered with training content that integrates a humanities orientation of psychoanalytic psychology with the scientific orientation of academic psychology. Currently (as of the summer semester 2018) a Bachelor of Science course in psychology and five Master of Arts programs are offered. Like any German university, the IPU can independently decide which academic degree to award.

A Master of Arts program in psychology represents a unique selling point within the German university landscape, otherwise the academic degrees Bachelor or Master of Science are awarded in psychology. In this way the humanities positioning of psychoanalytic psychology is particularly emphasized by the IPU. The situation is different in the USA, where study programs in psychology are often offered as part of Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts programs. In the 2017/2018 winter semester, the IPU switched from the Bachelor of Arts Psychology to the Bachelor of Science Psychology, as it followed the recommendations of the German Society for Psychology , which has recently recommended the Bachelor of Science in Psychology as an entry requirement for a consecutive Master’s program.

Overview:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Master of Arts (MA) Psychology (focus on "Clinical Psychology and Psychoanalysis")
  • Master of Arts (MA) English track (since WS 2017/18)
  • Master of Arts (MA) Interdisciplinary Psychosis Therapy
  • Master of Arts (MA) Psychoanalytical Cultural Studies
  • Master of Arts (MA) Leadership and Consulting

The university applicants have to face a two-stage selection process: In addition to the written application, a selection interview takes place. The IPU Berlin does not levy a numerus clausus (NC) on the courses. In cooperation with the Humboldt University ( Institute for Rehabilitation Sciences ), the IPU offers the Postgraduate Study Program to Accompany Individual Doctoral Dissertations (PSAID for short), which is headed by Michael B. Buchholz .

Ranking

When it first took part in the CHE master's ranking (2016), the Master of Arts in Psychology immediately took first place ahead of the University of Mannheim as the best state university. The IPU Berlin is in the top group in 12 of the 13 categories examined. This makes it the best university overall for a master's degree in psychology.

University outpatient clinic

Since November 2011, the IPU has maintained a psychotherapeutic university outpatient clinic founded by Heinrich Deserno , which is authorized according to Section 117 SGB V to settle the services provided there with the statutory health insurance companies. Since 2015 it has been led by the university professor Lutz Wittmann. The clinical work is embedded in the teaching and research of the IPU.

The range of services includes diagnostics, therapy and crisis intervention in children, adolescents and adults. All recognized guideline procedures are offered, i.e. analytical psychotherapy , deep psychology-based psychotherapy and behavioral therapy and these, depending on the indication, in individual or group therapeutic settings. The offer is aimed at all age groups and does not exclude any possible disorders. In addition, parent-infant-toddler psychotherapy (EKSP) is offered on an analytical basis. Advice and treatments in English are possible.

The university outpatient clinic operates a so-called research workshop with annual events that present specific topics from the work with the patients. It started its work in 2012 with the debate about the diagnosis of the structure. Then she dealt with the first interview (2013), with qualitative social research in psychoanalysis (2014), with psychotherapy in the third age (2015), with fear and personality (2016) and with the concept of trauma (2017). In November 2018 there will be a debate about the side effects of psychotherapy.
