Peter Fonagy (born August 14, 1952 in Budapest ) is an English psychologist and psychoanalyst and professor of psychology at University College London . Based on empirical research results, he developed the concept of mentalization and the mentalization-based psychotherapy based on it , which is used to treat mental disorders , especially structural disorders.

Life

Juvenile diabetes mellitus and the causes of non-compliance with medical advice was the first research focus of the young Fonagy. Peter Fonagy is a professor at University College London , where he holds the Freud Memorial Chair and heads the Psychoanalytic Unit for doctoral students. He is also research coordinator at the Anna Freud Center (London) and in this position he is the successor to Anna Freud and Joseph Sandler . He is Vice-President of the International Psychoanalytic Association and co-editor of a number of journals, e.g. B. the "International Journal of Psychoanalysis", "Development and Psychopathology" and the "Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic".

Fonagy particularly strives for empirical and interdisciplinary psychotherapy research with a focus on attachment theory , mentalization and psychoanalysis. In this regard, he is considered one of the world's leading minds.

He is considered to be the originator of the concept of mentalization , which links the theory of mind research and attachment theory with psychoanalytic theories. On the basis of the mentalization concept, Fonagy and his staff developed mentalization-based psychotherapy ( Mentalization-Based Treatment , or MBT for short ). This particular form of psychodynamic psychotherapy is used to treat severe personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder and dissocial personality disorder.
