The Hochschule für Gesundheit (hsg) in Bochum is a university of applied sciences (international: University of Applied Sciences ) in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was founded on November 1st, 2009 and is the first state university in Germany to offer training exclusively for health professions. In addition, bachelor students from the Department of Applied Health Sciences at the hsg complete their studies with the academic degree “Bachelor of Science” and the state examination in accordance with the relevant professional laws. This dual qualification is something special at a state university in Germany.
In view of the discussion about the scientification of the non-medical health professions, health and nursing courses are increasingly being set up at the state's universities. However, these are mostly advanced or specialization courses. The best-known example is the Master of Public Health . The University of Health, on the other hand, offers undergraduate courses .
History and organization
The university was founded on November 1, 2009 and started teaching after a year of preparation for the 2010/11 winter semester (start of the academic year) with a ceremony on September 20 with 200 students. The educational institution is the first state university for health professions in Germany. It offers undergraduate courses in occupational therapy, midwifery (male graduates are called maternity care workers), speech therapy, nursing, physiotherapy as well as the "Health and Diversity" course and the part-time Bachelor course "Health and Social Space". Since the 2015/16 winter semester, the first master’s course "Evidence-based Health Care" has been added to the range of courses. In the nursing degree program, specializations can be set in the areas of geriatric care , health and nursing as well as health and child care . In seven or eight semesters of undergraduate studies, students also receive the state qualification for professional practice with their degree. In addition, they receive internships and placement at a practical training institution. Practical exercises, such as bedside training, are also included in university teaching. Apart from the previous qualifications valid for universities of applied sciences, proof of a subject-specific four-week preliminary internship must be provided.
The university has been located on the NRW health campus since summer 2015 . The seminar and practice rooms have a capacity for 1,600 students. An event center complements the university rooms and offers space for internal and external events.
New building
The foundation stone for the new building was laid on September 28, 2012 . The building consists of two cubic structures with a white plaster facade. The design comes from " Léon - Wohlhage - Wernik Architects". The opening was delayed by various problems in the construction phase (especially with the fire protection technology ). The contract with the executing company Imtech was terminated in 2014. The University of Health opened on October 26, 2015.
