Child nursing is a branch of nursing . It is carried out by health and child nurses . Child care is an independent training occupation .

job profile

Employees from children's nursing work predominantly on the infant and children's wards in hospitals or outside the hospitals in home nursing. They are also employed in pediatric practices and in special facilities for children, for example in children's homes, day-care centers, facilities for the disabled, health resorts , children's hospices or facilities for short-term care . Employment in the context of development aid or the step into self-employment are also possible.

The job of the health and pediatric nurse (male / female) is to look after and support sick and dependent newborns, children and adolescents. This includes the perception and support of needs depending on the respective stage of development as well as the support of patients and their relatives in crisis situations. Dealing with sick children, who as patients can often only express themselves to a limited extent, but especially the care of seriously ill and dying children, requires emotional stability and a very high level of mental resilience. Shift and night shifts result in high physical stress.

The proportion of women (among the total number of nursing staff ) is around 86% (as of 2011). Efforts to increase the proportion of men in this profession will u. a. also supported as part of Boys' Day .

education

The training to become a health and child nurse lasts three years (4600 hours in theory and practice). The simultaneous acquisition of a qualification as a child nurse and as a health and nurse or geriatric nurse takes up to 3.5 years, depending on the federal state. The prerequisite is an intermediate level of education (e.g. secondary school leaving certificate ) or an equivalent school education. Pupils with a secondary school certificate can also be admitted, provided they have completed vocational training of at least two years. In Germany, training is regulated by the Law on Nursing Professions (KrPflG).

In addition, it is sometimes recommended - especially because of the stresses associated with this job - to complete an internship before training.

Job titles

In Austria, the job title is pediatric nurse / pediatric nurse . In Germany, too, this profession bore this name until 2003. Since then the legal designation has been health and child nurse . In Switzerland, the official designation of the comparable profession is nursing specialist .

Reforms and developments

Infant and Child Care Ordinance of November 15, 1939

It is still a female occupation with a minimal proportion of male employees. The first statutory regulations for child nursing training in the Federal Republic of Germany came in 1957.

In March 2012 a federal-state working group proposed further development of the nursing professions cornerstones for the preparation of the draft of a new nursing professions law . Thereafter, the geriatric care training, the health and nursing or child nursing training will be merged into a generalist nursing training and a new academic training will be introduced.

In July 2017, a legislative procedure was completed that was called a draft law for the reform of the nursing professions (Pflegeberufereformgesetz - PflBRefG) by the federal government presenting the bill ; with the draft of March 9, 2016. It comprises 68 paragraphs. The three previously separate training courses in health and nursing, children's nursing and care for the elderly are to be gradually merged into a single, likewise three-year vocational training program after 2026.

Essential contents of the new law relate to

  • the future admission requirements (usually secondary school leaving certificate),
  • Duration (three years or part-time up to five years),
  • Principles of nationwide uniform financing,
  • the curriculum still to be developed (for the generalist phase from 2020 (year 1 and 2) and the specialization phase in the third year of training),
  • Permission to use the respective job title (there are health, pediatric and geriatric nurses in addition to the nursing staff)
  • as well as the tasks and structures of the vocational schools.

A future evaluation should provide the decision-making basis for maintaining or abolishing the professions of child nursing and care for the elderly after 2026.

Entry into academic training for nurses (teaching and management level) is also mentioned. A training and examination regulation is, that is a special feature, to be enacted through the legislative process.
