Zemfira Aliyevna Meftachetdinova ( Azerbaijani Zemfira Meftahətdinova ; born May 28, 1963 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a former Soviet, from 1993 Azerbaijani sports shooter . In 2000 she was the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal for Azerbaijan, and to this day (as of 2018) she is the only female Olympic champion in her country.

Career

Zemfira Meftachetdinova began shooting sports in 1976. In 1986 she won the silver medal in skeet at the European Championships. After bronze in 1987, two more silver medals followed in 1988 and 1990.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she first appeared for Azerbaijan at the European Championships in 1993, set a world record with 118 hits out of 125 shots and won the title. In 1995 she set her world record at the world championships and won her first world title. In 1997 she won her second European title by setting the world record of 119 hits that was valid at the time.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, skeet shooting was held as an Olympic women's competition for the first time. The mode was changed from 125 rounds to 75 rounds in the preliminary and 25 rounds in the final. Zemfira Meftachetdinowa qualified for the final with 73 goals and won the gold medal with 25 goals in the final ahead of Russian Swetlana Djomina and Hungarian Diána Igaly .

In 2001 Meftachetdinowa won her second world title with 94 hits (72 + 22), in 2003 she scored 96 hits (73 + 23) at the European Championship and received her third European gold medal. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she achieved third place with 93 goals (71 + 22) behind Diána Igaly and the Chinese Wei Ning .

The policewoman, who competed for Dinamo Baku , remained active until 2014, but was unable to win any international medals after 2004, when she took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing for the third time in 2008 and missed the finals in 15th place in the preliminary battle.
