Jay Hoggard
Jay Hoggard (* 28. September 1954 in New York City ) is an American vibraphonist of modern jazz . He also plays the xylophone and balaphone .
Life
Jay Hoggard initially played the piano and saxophone, but then switched to the vibraphone as his main instrument in the 1960s. He studied music in New Haven , New England, where he worked with Anthony Davis and Wadada Leo Smith in the 1970s , then moved to New York City in 1988 , where he played again with Davis and Chico Freeman (heard on the album "Spirit Sensitive "from 1978), also with Bill Barron , John Blake , Bobby McFerrin , James Newton , John Purcell , Sam Rivers , Cecil Taylor , James Newton and Kenny Burrell (" Guiding Spirit ", 1989). In 1992 he took part in Anthony Braxton's big band production "Four (Ensemble) Compositions". Since 1978 Hoggard has recorded several albums under his own name for the labels "India Navigation", Muse "and Contemporary , such as the highly acclaimed album" Overview "with Geri Allen , Ed Rozie and Freddie Waits in 1989. In 2000 he worked for Oliver Lake's album "Talkin 'Stick." Hoggard teaches at Wesleyan University in New Haven and leads their jazz band.
