Jamie Baum

Jamie Baum (* in Connecticut ) is an American jazz flutist (flute, alto flute, bass flute) and composer.

Live and act

Baum grew up in Fairfield (Connecticut) and initially learned the piano. She has lived in New York City since the mid-1980s and studied at the Manhattan School of Music (Bachelor in Jazz Composition) and at the New England Conservatory of Music , taking classes with Dave Liebman , Richie Beirach , Hubert Laws and Jaki Byard , among others Classes. She also briefly attended the Berklee College of Music and spent a year at the École Normale de Musique de Paris . She played with Paul Motian , George Russell , John Abercrombie , Fred Hersch , Tom Harrell , Kenny Barron , Mick Goodrick , Billy Hart , Uri Caine , Patrizia Scascitelli and Monika Herzig , among others .

Baum has been playing with his own septet since 1999 (with trumpeter Ralph Alessi and saxophonist / clarinetist Doug Yates, Jeff Hirshfield drums, Johannes Weidenmüller bass, George Colligan piano, Tom Varner and later Vincent Chancey Waldhorn), plays in a duo with Richie Beirach and is Ko -Leader of a Jaki-Byard project.

She has released several albums under her own name, first in 1992 Undercurrents ( Konnex Records , with Randy Brecker , Dave Douglas ), 1997 Sight Unheard ( GM Recordings , mostly own compositions, with Dave Douglas, Kenny Werner ), 2004 Moving Forward, Standing Still ( Omnitone , with her septet) and in 2008 Solace ( Sunnyside Records , with her septet, with a composition that ties in with Charles Ives fourth symphony).

In 1999 she completed jazz ambassador tours on behalf of the State Department in South America and in 2002 in India and South Asia. She teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and from 2011 to 2013 at the Berklee College of Music and at many jazz clinics. She also gives courses in improvisation for classically trained flautists.

Prizes and awards

In 1999 she won the International Jazz Composers Alliance / Julius Hemphill Composition Award in the Small Group category. In 2012 she led the Down Beat for Flute Critic's Poll in the Rising Star category (in which she has been included since 1998). She was several times (first in 2005) Jazz Flutist of the Year of the Jazz Journalists Association .
