Monika Herzig

Monika Herzig (born June 12, 1964 in Albstadt ) is a German jazz musician ( piano , composition ) and musicologist.

Act

Herzig, who first had to learn melodica before taking piano lessons at the age of nine, was also active as a church organist as a teenager; at high school she also played the alto saxophone . She studied at the Pedagogical University Weingarten and in 1987 went to the University of Alabama for a year as an exchange . After graduating there in 1988, she moved to the USA with her future husband, guitarist Peter Kienle , where she completed her Masters at the University of Alabama in 1991. During her doctoral studies at Indiana University , she developed Elements of Jazz Piano Pedagogy (1997). She then taught at the faculty.

As a musician, she has worked with Kienle's fusion band BeebleBrox and with David Baker ; With her Monika Herzig Acoustic Project she has released six albums since 2000. In 2018 her album Sheroes was released , which she presented internationally with musicians such as Reut Regev , Jamie Baum , Leni Stern , Jennifer Vincent and Rosa Avila.

In 2011 she published a musicological monograph on David Baker ( David Baker - A Legacy in Music ); Experiencing Chick Corea (Rowman & Littlefield) was introduced in 2017 .

Prizes and awards

Herzig won in 1994 with Let's Fool One competition Best Original Composition of Down Beat . Between 1994 and 1996 she was a two-time finalist with BeebleBrox at the WTPI Winter Jazzfest Competition in Indianapolis and won the competition with Oliver Nelson Jr. The Indiana Arts Commission awarded her Individual Artist Grants in 2000, 2003 and 2005 . In 2012, Herzig received an “Outstanding Rating” from the Association of American University Presses for her book publication . The Jazz Journalists Association named her "JazzHero" because of her contributions to jazz at the college campus Bloomington (Indiana) .
