Mario Rossy

Mario Rossy (* 1962 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish jazz musician ( double bass , composition ).

Rossy comes from a family of musicians; his older sister was the pianist Mercedes Rossy ; his younger brother Jorge Rossy is also active as a jazz musician. He first studied classical double bass with Ferran Sala and Ludwig Streicher and then in jazz with Ron Carter at the City College of New York .

First he was a member of the classical music formations World Orchestra JJMM (1982), Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona (1983–1984) and the Orquesta de Cámara del Teatre Lliure (1987–1992). Lluís Vidal also brought him into his jazz band Incus . Tete Montoliu made recordings with him and the Orquestra Taller de musics in 1988 . With his brother and Brad Mehldau , he formed a trio that also made recordings with Perico Sambeat on Fresh Sound Records in 1993.

Rossy also worked with Jimmy Cobb , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Johnny Griffin , Chris Cheek , Wynton Marsalis , Paquito D'Rivera , Bebo Valdés , Horacio "El Negro" Hernández , Jeff Ballard , Sheila Jordan , Jordi Bonell and toured internationally. Between 2004 and 2012 he was part of the Chano Domínguez sextet and trio ; his album Flamenco Sketches was nominated for a Grammy in 2013 for "best Latin jazz album". He also played with Gerardo Núñez , Niño Josele and Josemi Carmona. Rossy has participated in more than 80 recordings, including with George Colligan and Mark Turner .

Rossy teaches jazz and improvisation as a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya ; he also works at Berklee Valencia .
