The Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Higher Music School of Catalonia), also abbreviated ESMUC , is the only state university music training facility in Barcelona. This educational institution is located in L'Auditori , in the Barcelona Auditorium, a complex of buildings that houses concert halls and several music organizations.

The music college

The college of music began its training in the 2001/2002 academic year, initially at a temporary location, an old educational center on Berenguer de Palou street not far from the La Sagrera district . In 2004 she moved to the auditorium in Barcelona. It offers courses and degrees in the following areas:

  • Interpretation (in the areas of classical and contemporary music, jazz and modern music, early and traditional music)
  • composition
  • Conducting (choir and orchestra)
  • Musicology
  • Music education (general and for instruments)
  • Sonology
  • Music production and management

The violinist Gerard Claret i Serra , who founded the project, was the first director. In 2005 the conductor Salvador Mas i Conde took over the direction , from 2008 to 2018 the bassoonist Josep Borràs i Rocca . Since November 2018, Núria Sempere (professor in the field of music production and management) has headed the music academy. She is assisted by the music therapist Melissa Mercadal as academic director. Both management staff come from the institution's existing professors.

There are currently around 150 new students admitted each academic year. A total of 200 professors and teaching staff are currently available to the approximately 600 students.
