Carles Benavent (born March 1, 1954 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish bass guitarist of fusion jazz , who also influenced groups of Flamenco Nuevo .

Live and act

At the age of thirteen, Benavent founded the jazz and rock band Crack with Salvador Font and Emili Baleriola, and two years later the rock group Maquina! originated. In 1975 he was one of the founders of the group Música Urbana, along with Joan Albert Amargós , Salvador Font, Jaume Cortadellas , Jordi Bonell and Matthew Simon .

After a short collaboration with the Max Sunyer Trio (with Salvador Niebla ), he became a member of the Paco de Lucía Band in 1980 (with Jorge Pardo , Rubem Dantas , Ramón de Algeciras and others), of which he was a member until 2001. In 1981 he made various flamenco recordings, especially with Camarón de la Isla and Paco de Lucía. The following year he took part in two world tours by Chick Corea and recorded two albums with him.

In 1983 his first album was released as a band leader under the title Carles Benavent . He performed with Jorge Pardo at the Grenoble Jazz Festival and won the special jury prize. From 1987 to 1988 he toured France with Didier Lockwood and Bernard Lubat and their bands.

In 1990 Benavent gave a concert on Swiss television with Jorge Pardo, Gil Goldstein , Don Alias and Alex Acuña , which resulted in the album Zebra Coast in New York . The following year he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Miles Davis in an orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones in compositions by Gil Evans .

In 1996 he entered the Getxo Jazz Festival with his band, which included Jorge Pardo, Joan Albert Amargós , Rubem Dantas , Tino di Geraldo , Gil Goldstein and, as a guest, Othello Molineaux . With Tino di Geraldo and Jorge Pardo he founded the trio Benavent-Di Geraldo-Pardo in 1998 , whose first album El Concierto de Sevilla was recorded in 1999; As on the later album Sin precedentes , the trio showed its prominent position in flamenco jazz . In 2000 he took part in the England tour for Don Alias' 60th birthday with Alias, Alex Acuña, Giovanni Hidalgo , Steve Barrios , Michael and Randy Brecker and Gil Goldstein.

In 2003 he founded a new trio with Jordi Bonell and Roger Blàvia , which performed at the Vitoria Jazz Festival with Jorge Pardo, Tino di Geraldo, Gil Goldstein and Pat Metheny . In 2004 he toured again with Chick Corea and took part in 2005 on his album The Ultimate Adventure . Stéphane Galland brought him into his band Lobi in 2012 .
