Othello Molineaux

Othello Molineaux (* 1939 in Longdenville ) is a trinidadischer steel drum player , who especially in the field of Jazz worked. At the beginning of his international career he often played with Jaco Pastorius . He then worked as a sought-after sideman and featured artist with musicians such as Monty Alexander , Ahmad Jamal , Chicago and David Johanson.

Live and act

His mother taught him to play the piano at an early age, and his father played the violin. At the age of eleven he began to play the steel drum, at 15 he could build and tune the instrument. At the same age he formed his first band, the Winder Harps . He received further training at Fatima College and Queen's Royal College . He left Trinidad in 1967 to pursue a career as a piano player in Saint Thomas . Meanwhile, he continued to devote himself to the steel drum.

He first caught on in the jazz scene in 1976 when he appeared on Jaco Pastorious' grammy- nominated debut album. Since then he has performed in concerts around the world, with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie , Herbie Hancock, Monty Alexander, Weather Report , Joe Zawinul , Carles Benavent and Ahmad Jamal. Over the years he has arranged for steel bands in Trinidad, such as the Laventille Serenaders, Valley Harps, Tripoli, East Side Symphony, Nevados, Tobago Starlift and for the Pamberi Steelband for the Panorama competition.

He received the Commendation from the Ohio House of Representatives in 1987 and the Vanguard Award for Outstanding Leadership Among Black Musicians in 1991 .
