Panorama (music)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Panorama is an annual national music competition by steel bands from Trinidad and Tobago .

history

The competition was the first time in 1963 by the Trinidad and Tobago Steelband Association as part of the Carnival in Trinidad performed. Until 2001 this event was held at Queen's Park Savannah , a public park in Port of Spain . From 2002 the first round of the competition was moved to the panyards of the participating steel bands. Since 2006, the final has been held at Skinner Park in San Fernando .

In the first few years a distinction was made between two categories: the pan around the neck steel bands, who played their steel pans on belts, and the so-called “conventional” steel bands with instruments on stands. In the early 1970s, the upper limit of participating musicians per band was limited to 120 people after groups of up to 200 players had formed. In 1979 the competition was boycotted by the Steelbands led by Rudolph Charles . These demanded higher premiums.

In 2000 the steel bands were divided into the three subcategories small band , medium band and big band , the maximum number of players being 45, 65 and 100.

music

The calypsos to be played are mostly simple pieces of music that are arranged by means of intro, variations of the different steel pans of a band and changes of keys. This is the job of an arranger . The musicians meet in the panyards every evening for rehearsals . The piece of music is played completely by heart in the competition. A common calypso is expanded into a 10-minute arrangement with rhythm changes and variations.

rating

The competition is divided into three rounds, the preliminary rounds, the semi-finals and the final. The musical performance is assessed in the first two rounds by five judges, in the final by seven judges, whereby the highest and lowest marks are deleted. The individual judge can award a maximum of 100 points, 40 each for composition and execution and 10 points each for the sound of the band and its rhythm part.
