Anthony Williams (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony "Tony" Williams (born June 24, 1931 in Port of Spain , Trinidad ) is a Trinidadian inventor , pioneer and musician of the steel pan .

Life

Williams was born in General Hospital and raised on Nepal Street in the St. James neighborhood. Along with Winston "Spree" Simon , Neville Jules and Elliot Mannette, he is one of the great developers of the Steel Pan. At the age of 20 he was a member of the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra TASPO , which visited England .

In 1953 Tony Williams presented a soprano pan, the pitch of which corresponded to the circle of fifths. Because this arrangement of notes looked like a spider web, Williams named his instrument Spider Web Pan . Since then, the soprano steel pan , which was arranged and built in this way, has been the only musical instrument that faithfully implements the theoretical concept of the circle of fifths up to that point in time. This Williams invention is accepted worldwide and there are now only a few steel pan builders who produce different tone arrangements.

Tony Williams was the band leader, pantuner and arranger of the Pan Am North Stars and won the national steel band competition Panorama with this group in 1962 and 1963 .

In 1992 Tony Williams was awarded the Chaconia Medal in gold. He was also awarded the highest order of Trinidad's Order of the Republic by President George Maxwell Richards in 2008 in recognition of his achievements .
