Neville "Cap" Jules (born May 21, 1927 in Laventille ) is a Trinidadian steel pan musician and instrument maker.

life and work

Neville Jules is one of the developers of the Steel Pan alongside Winston "Spree" Simon , Anthony Williams and Elliot Mannette . He lived in Laventille as a little boy . Before he was ten, his family moved to the East Dry River area in central Port of Spain . Since the family now lived near Duke Street Bridge, where the percussion group practice area was, Jules was often there. During the Second World War , when Spree Simon was building his first melody instruments, Jules was busy building deeper sounding baritone and bass instruments. In 1945 he presented his so-called "Tune Boom", a metal bucket with only one low tone. In the following years, Jules developed his concept further and is now considered the inventor of the bass pan and the guitar pan, an accompanying instrument in the baritone register. In addition, Neville Jules was the head of the steel band Trinidad All Stars from the post-war period into the 1960s . As the first arranger, he rewrote current and classical hits from other music genres for calypso instruments, thus helping the genre to gain popularity. In 1972 he moved to New York and stayed with the Steel Pan as a music teacher.
