Destra Garcia (* 10. November 1978 in Laventille ) is a Trinidadian Soca - singer and -Songwriterin .

Career

Garcia began at the age of ten years Calypso singing and won several singing contests at the secondary school attended by her in the district of St. James in Port of Spain . At the age of 16 she was involved in a record production for the first time as a singer in an R&B band. In 1997 Garcia was a founding member of the four-member R&B group Psyke, which disbanded after a year. In 1999 she was hired as a singer by the calypso and soca band Roy Cape All Stars. In 2002 she joined the Socaband Atlantik as lead singer and held this position until 2008. Since 2003 Garcia has published singles and solo albums at irregular intervals. For the singles she entered into several collaborations with other soca and calypso artists, for example with Machel Montano ( It's Carnival , 2003), David Rudder ( The Hammer Revisited , 2005) or Sean Paul ( Free It Up , 2008). In 2004, their single Bonnie N Clyde was used in the North American market for TV commercials by Captain Morgan . In 2006 she made a small appearance in Germany as part of the World Cup . In 2013 she founded the Socaband Bakanal, in which she is lead singer alongside Olatunji Yearwood (winner of the International Groovy Soca Monarch 2015) and Stuart Silva.

Garcia composes and writes most of her songs himself, but has individual titles written by other Soca artists such as Kerwin Du Bois .

Awards

During the carnival season, Soca and Calypso are competitive in the Lesser Antilles ; As part of the carnival parades, several competitions take place in which some specialist juries and some the audience vote on songs written for the occasion. The most famous of these competitions are the International Soca Monarch and the Road March. Garcia took second place in both competitions, the Soca Monarch in 2003 and the Road March in 2003, 2004 and 2009. At the COTT Music Awards, she won the title "Female Songwriter of the Year" six times between 2003 and 2008 in Episode. At the International Soca Awards 2013 it won the award in the category "Best Pan Soca of the Year". In 2014 and 2015 she won the Black Canadian Awards in the category "Best International Act - Caribbean".

Private

Garcia is the oldest of four siblings. Her grandfather Frankie Garcia was a jazz saxophonist, her father Lloyd Garcia is a guitarist, and several uncles play in steel bands . She studied sales management and at the beginning of her musical career she worked for an office supplies manufacturer. Destra Garcia lives with her manager Brian Morris and is the mother of a daughter born in 2010.
