David Rudder

David Michael Rudder (born May 6, 1953 in Port of Spain ) is a Trinidadian calypso and soca musician and singer.

Life

David Rudder was born in the Belmont district of Port of Spain . He has eight siblings. He spent most of his childhood with his grandmother. As a toddler, he suffered from poliomyelitis , which prevented one of his legs from developing. When he was twelve he sang in a calypso band for the first time. In 1977 he joined the group Charlie's Roots , known in Trinidad , with whom he achieved his national breakthrough.

In 1986 Rudder composed the calypso The Hammer , in which he sang about the well-known steelpan maker Rudolph Charles . This calypso was played by many steel bands during the panorama competition . In 1989 he was represented with three titles on the soundtrack of the film Wild Orchids . In 1990 he won the Calypso Album of the Year title at the Caribbean Music Awards in New York.
